Although this seminar cannot possibly offer an exhaustive examination of
epistemology—the study of how we come to know what we know— participants will
improve their ability to recognize and evaluate the expertise behind the
expert, the biases, logical and illogical assumptions, design strengths and
flaws of data, studies, news releases, and reports. Examples from current
articles, published research, and excerpts from books will be used as hands-on
seminar material for examples, discussion, and practice. Further reading will
be suggested as follow-up based on the interests of participants.
Various topics in genetics, epigenetics, physiology, behavior, and symbolic
representation, and past and current cultural trends will be addressed as they
relate to dogs and dog training.
Here are typical topics which might be addressed (made relevant to dog
training):
-
The nature of scientific investigation and progress. What is the difference
between science and belief?
-
What are the hallmarks of a good scientific study?
-
What is a good scientific conclusion?
-
What is a scientific theory and what are its limits?
-
How to recognize junk science.
-
